Steaming: Amnesia: The Dark Descent

My steam library is comparatively small, but it still contains a great number of unplayed games. The only way out is through. In alphabetical order.

I would hardly call myself a horror game fan. I love horror, but I don’t like jumpscares and I don’t really like being the protagonist: I’d much rather watch someone else have a bad time of things. I do try to keep my hand in, though, because, like other media, when horror is good, it’s very good. Silent Hill 2 remains one of my favourite games.

So I played Amnesia: The Dark Descent. And it’s fine. It was fun, but I didn’t find it life changing. I wonder if the reason for that is that I came to it so late: I’d already heard a lot about it. Maybe playing it when it was brand new was a whole different thing. I don’t remember that time too well but I believe this was one of the first horror games streamers started recording reaction videos to. That said, some of the set pieces were really brilliant - I really enjoyed how they chose to keep the doors analogue, so holding them closed while you hide remains a conscious decision, and I loved it when the monsters were an unknown entity. It is genuinely scary when one is chasing you! The light stuff was interesting, but also frustrating in equal measure. That aspect of the game has barely survived in my memory.

I liked it enough that I’ll try the sequel, I think. That’s on my steam account, so I guess I’ll have to.
